GPCG Work Program

ProjectsGPCG undertakes project activity in the following areas:

  • Standards for the collection, coding, classification and transmission of clinical and administrative data;
  • Sustainable education and training programs that enable GPs to make effective use of computer systems;
  • Establisment and maintenance of electronic databases that confirm to agreed standards and that improve the quality of patient care. This includes access to and up to date diagnostic and treatment information in an electronic format;
  • Support GPs to be able to exchange information electronically with other heatlth care providers and organisations; and
  • Support GPs to contribute to and participate in the aggregation and effective use of data for research and population health.

The most recent program of activity, Phase Two Projects, was completed in June 2005

  • Phase Two Working Groups  ( 3 items )

    Between December 2004 and June 2005, the GPCG established Working Groups to support and guide the activities during Phase Two of the GPCG Work Program.

  • Phase Two Projects  ( 13 items )

    Overview of Phase Two Work Plan

    The activities in the Phase Two Work Plan build on the results and outputs of the activities in Phase One. Initial technical foundation work undertaken by the GPCG since 1999 is being brought together to help GPs better perform many of their important clinical and administrative tasks by harnessing new technologies. The information management solutions included in Phase Two will provide more immediate benefits to both GPs and patients, particularly in the area of chronic disease management and prevention through the provision of education, reliable data, clinical decision support and the underlying technical standards.

    Phase Two activities will enable the effective implementation of a range of health initiatives to enhance GPs clinical work and streamline GPs business processes to support more efficient work practices. Improved GP management of chronic illness will be achieved by targeting "at risk" patients and providing GPs access to the latest evidence-based clinical guidelines to support patient care.

    Phase Two also has a strong consumer focus around ensuring patients are better educated and have an increasing participation in the management of their personal health information. The GPCG is also committed to developing the informatics capacity of GPs and establishing and promoting health informatics as a field in its own right.

    The total funding allocation for Phase Two of the GPCG Work Program is $6.1 million with implementation scheduled for completion by 30 June 2005.

    Overview of Phase One Completed Projects

    The Commonwealth Government has made available a total of up to $9 million over three years to progress the GPCG's Work Program. In Phase One, $1.9 million is specifically available to progress standards development, the practical use of information management to support the 2001-02 Budget initiatives relating to chronic disease management and other GPCG projects, some of which build on earlier GPCG work.

    The Phase One Work Program reflects the GPCG's strategic direction as set out in the original Strategic Framework and identifies specific activities to be advanced by the GPCG to progress GP IM&IT. The work program covered the funding period 1 July 2001 to 30 June 2004 building on the principles under the first strategic framework to develop an integrated, evidence based and outcome focused health system. The GPCG is now funded through to June 2005.

    The activities undertaken during Phase One have been completed. Activities are progressing under Phase Two which are being conducted under each of the Working Groups.
